The client's brief was for a family-friendly garden behind a Victorian semi-detached house. The garden concentrates the budget on one feature - the pergola, while leaving the majority of the space open for play. A combination of timber, galvanised steel and rendered masonry, it stands over a painted concrete table and benches where the family can gather to eat. The perimeter walls are rendered and painted whilst the ground surface is covered with artificial grass. Whilst the garden is an enclosed Hortus Conclusus the vertical posts of the pergola lead the eye up to the limitless sky.
